Spiritual Therapy: Can it Heal the Physical Ailment?

Spiritual Therapy through the Quran

It’s a hot discourse worldwide whether spiritual therapy can heal physical illness. The answer is yes, but how much can the severity of a disease be cured? The discourse begins with the idea that “music therapy helps reduce depression.”. In contrast, when the effect measured with the Quran, “efficacy of Surah Ar-Rehman in managing depression,” the results were considerably good. Such articles focused mostly on the healing therapy of spiritual illness or mental health issues. However, authentic and empirical information regarding the healing of physical health is lacking. Therefore, this article provides new insights into the therapeutic impact, healing process, and procedure of spiritual therapy in the context of the Holy Quran (specifically Chapter No. 89, i.e., Sura Ar-Rahman).

The Healing Power of the Quran

Muslims believe that the Quran is the ultimate remedy to all human issues, as Allah says in the Quran’s Chapter No. 17, Verse 82: We send down the Quran as healing and mercy for the believers. For Muslims, it is enough that Quran is the book of Allah Almighty revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (Peach Be Upon Him) and Allah will be the guardian, as mentioned in Chapter 15 Al-Hijr, Verse 9: “Indeed, it is We who sent down the Quran, and indeed, We will be its guardian.” But what evidence could be striking for non-Muslims to acknowledge the truthfulness of the Quran? This is strong evidence that Quran is unchanged around for more than a century without any changes.

It’s a profound wisdom that things empirically testify hold more value than mere subjectivity. Jean Rhodes emphasized observable, measurable phenomena rather than speculation or intuition. Many Muslim medical doctors have practically tested and demonstrated the healing power of Surah Ar-Rahman. Some of doctors themselves suffering from serious illnesses. Dr. Javed, a leading doctor among them, contracted HIV through exposure to an infected patient’s blood. After prick, his result became positive in 6 months. He heared of Surah Ar-Rahman therapy and got extraordinary results. Now, he recommends this Surah to many patients in the hospital. Dr Khalid Jamil Akhtar, Neurologist, Shadman General Hospital, Lahore and some other doctors practice this therapy, that yielding positive results.

Is Surah Rahman alone?

No, every letter of the Holy Quran is healing; even Surah Al-Fatiha is called Surah Al-Shifa in the Hadith Sharif. Similarly, the action of Abu Saeed Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) also shows that when the chief of a tribe was bitten by a scorpion, they asked for help. He started reciting Surah Al-Fatiha, blowing on it by spitting on the place, and this cured the man.

Similarly, other Surahs have also had healing effects. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon Him) used to recite the Surah An-Nas and Surah Al-Falaq during illness and then blow His breath on the body. But nowadays, treatment through Surah Ar-Rahman has gained much popularity for some reasons. First, many successful case studies are available, including medical doctors who did not trust such types of therapies at all, but after obtaining results, they are now following the Surah Ar-Rahman therapy.

Scientific and Spiritual Insights

In the contemporary world, science has recognized the benefits of sound therapy and positive affirmations. Studies in neuroplasticity suggest that repetitive sounds and phrases can rewire neural pathways that accelerate positive effects and changes in thought patterns and emotional responses. Sura Ar-Rahman’s striking feature is repetitive verses and rhythmic recitation which align with these principles enhancing the healing possibilities holistically.

Treatment method with Surah Rahman:

The method of treatment with Surah Rahman is the easiest and cheapest and is within everyone’s reach. There are six steps to this treatment:

  1. First, listen to Surah Rahman in audio in the voice of Qari Abdul Basit Misri, which consists of 17 minutes and 56 seconds. Similarly, it is better to hear in the voice of Qari Syed Sadaqat Ali, which consists of about 22 minutes. Keep in mind that recitation should be without translation.
  2. Close your eyes and envision yourself in front of Allah Almighty. Listen with unwavering concentration and profound contemplation.
  3. Forgive everyone sincerely from the heart for the sake of Allah Almighty, no matter how deeply someone has wronged you.
  4. When the recitation is over, open your eyes and take half a glass of water.
  5. Close your eyes again and silently invoke the name of Allah Almighty three times with great reverence, veneration and deep affection.
  6. Finally, partake of water in three sips.
  7. Repeat this process for 7 days in the morning, afternoon, and evening.

Important instructions:

People tend to prioritize the tangible aspects of life over the intangible ones. Consequently, adhering to principles or beliefs that lie beyond the realm of perception becomes profoundly challenging. This is why it is exceedingly challenging for most people to have faith in the unseen, wholeheartedly embrace the commands of Allah and His Messenger, and put them into practice. NoNowadays, many people increasingly rely on Surah Rahman therapy, even though believers have practiced healing through the Quran since its revelation. There are two primary reasons for this. First, testimonials from patients who have miraculously recovered from near-death experiences and are now leading fulfilling lives. Second, highly qualified doctors holding degrees from prestigious institutions in developed countries are incorporating Surah Rahman into their treatment regimens.

Conclusion

The core issue, however, is that Allah did not primarily reveal the Quran for healing; He sent it to establish an Islamic system. Therefore, if doctors recommend it solely for therapeutic purposes, and similarly, if women appear in media without observing proper hijab to extol the virtues of Surah Rahman while neglecting to promote its teachings and work towards implementing its principles, the impact will be superficial and temporary. Such actions risk diminishing the true essence and spirit of the Quran.
